About Me
If you haven't worked it out yet, I'm passionate about blogging! I build blogs, I optimize and market blogs, I coach bloggers, and in the gaps I blog about blogging. Phew!

I am a capable designer, programmer, marketer, writer, trainer/educator and strategist, obsessing over this internet thing since 1995.

As the CEO of Australis Media, I have my attention these days almost entirely on our Internet Marketing Masterminds group, teaching small business owners and marketers how to make the most of social media marketing, blogging and all that cool stuff.

@thadbong many of the boo boos revolve around mistreating others when emotions get to you. Call in blog rage or tweet rage! 19 hours ago

Alister Cameron // Blogologist : The World's Largest Treehouse for $7 million! a year ago
Thanks Russ. And others. It seems they've disappeared. Bummer. Takes a bit of the gloss off this article, doesn't it!? On the other hand, it makes this article all the more a "focus" of discussion about that company! Should I be upset?? *wink*

Alister Cameron // Blogologist : Victorian Government abuses a child to save a smoker? a year ago
Our preacher in church tonight showed this video, to demonstrate something to do with emotional intensity, or something... but all I could think was that nothing was said about the kid, and how they got him to do that crying, etc...

The Wordpress dashboard… another secret source of blog traffic (Alister Cameron // Blogologist) 2 years ago
@Kabitzin - in the more recent releases of Wordpress, these links are AJAX post-loaded with jQuery. They should not load until everything else on the page has loaded. (The Technorati, Dev Blog and Wordpress Planet links all load in this way.)

Farewell Ultimate Tag Warrior (Alister Cameron // Blogologist) 2 years ago
@Andy - mate, I stuck with my original conversion. I plan to make the leap at some time, which should be pretty easy, but I've left that for another day. @Nathan - thanks buddy, I missed that one. Will get to it asap. @Matt - the only one that I saw newly integrated was UTW (sort of) with the new native tagging (taxonomy thingy). There may be others, but not that I was using. @Brent - there is a very good UTW-specific importer in Wordpress 2.3. It worked without a hitch (I tested it first!). One thing on plugins... It may be that more plugins will/would break after deleting the tables in the database that are no longer used in Wordpress 2.3. I have left those tables there. I figured it was easier for now to do that. www.boren.nu has more on schema changes in 2.3 if you need to know... -Alister

So long Mosso, hello MediaLayer (Alister Cameron // Blogologist) 2 years ago
Aaron, the issues I and others had with Mosso were largely nothing to do with the "features", meaning that the speed was great, the platform was excellent and did what it was supposed to do, etc. Lots of bandwidth and storage, etc. Some have/had issues with the control panel and it's lack of maturity... but that will evolve. Things that were annoying to some there was a lack of a cron "manager" (like in Plesk, say), email autoresponders, etc. These are the refinements that an old and mature hosting control panel has, which the home-made Mosso one presently lacks. But the killer issue for Mosso was and remains the stability. It's all in the stability. My site was down far too often. An hour here, an hour there, and -- what killed me -- nearly four days, when they mysteriously decided it was my site killing a MySql cluster, and sin-binned it. They then reloaded my database on a new MySql cluster, thus restoring my site, but took a month (no joke) to hook up phpMyAdmin access for that new cluster, despite my repeated beggings for it. Finally a client of mine's site has (still has, coz I'm yet to move him off Mosso)a weird 512 HTTP error given out to all majoy search engine spiders, meaning that he's lost his Pagerank 5 and Google has now deindexed him. I have left his site there so Mosso can diagnose the issue (figuring that since we did nothing it must be in their Apache setup somehow), but nothing. Again, despite many attempts including emails to the founders. His site is next to leave Mosso. Hope that fills it out a little. Mosso is great if downtimes here and there don't matter. That said, they have a new CTO and his ONLY mandate, by his own confession, is stability and reliability. If he's true to that then I would again recommend Mosso, if you can justify the USD$100/mo, which was a lot for me. Cheers, -Alister

Linking to Wikipedia is lazy and a disservice to someone else who really deserves the link! (Alister Cameron // Blogologist) 2 years ago
Sully, I suppose it may not have been strategic... it depends. But it's at least possible that the Wikipedia guys thought ahead to the time when people would link in this way... Of course if they ever tun ads on there they'll get in trouble with Google, as (I assume) did answers.com, who are not at all in the SERPs like they used to be... -Alister

So long Mosso, hello MediaLayer (Alister Cameron // Blogologist) 2 years ago
Joe, I came across MediaLayer after an extensive "analysis" of the options on Web Hosting Talk, which is by far the biggest and best discussion forum for all things hosting-related. MediaLayer hasn't been around forever, but they got consistently good feedback/commentary, and their price was ok for me. They're also located in LA. I wanted my site hosted on the west coast of the US, as few hops away from me as possible (in Melbourne, AU), but still hosted in the States for my international readership, in a leading datacenter, etc. I pay the top rate at MediaLayer and have a number of other family/client sites migrating over there as well.

I got flamed for my birthday! (Alister Cameron // Blogologist) 2 years ago
Thanks everyone for your kind wishes on my birthday. Sadly, we no longer have the full story here, as Micah's post has been deleted, as has my (I hoped helpful) comment, Meg's and anyone else's. I didn't get to see my own comment "moderated into existence" on his blog, or Meg's or anyone elses. I guess deleting non-spam comments and even full posts is another sign of what I'd call bad blogging technique. Anyway, I think Micah's had his 15 minutes. He also got a post of his promoted on Digg, so may have been feeling momentarily invincible or something...

Sandbox Theming Tricks: Pure CSS Asides (Alister Cameron // Blogologist) 2 years ago
@Joe - Yes. They're absolutely 100% standard Wordpress posts. Nothing to change about them at all, except to add them to a specific category, against which you apply the different styling. In my case a category called "asides", which is fairly logical :) And yes, the CSS makes a bunch of what would normally appear in the blog posts invisible... it also pulls the paragraph spacing out, it changes the colours of links, adds the left-hand border, etc. @Aaron - I am banking on the fact that the SEs have seen enough display:none styling tricks that are not about cloaking, to realise that a blanket ban is impossible to apply. I know for a fact they don't do that..

My long-overdue “asides”… at last! (Alister Cameron // Blogologist) 2 years ago
@Meg - ha ha! Right you are. My point was that until I have written a few, I will not be sure they sit correctly on the page in every different "setting"... but thanks for the laugh :)

I’m on TV tonight! (Alister Cameron // Blogologist) 2 years ago
Thanks everyone, for your kind words. It was a hoot. @Bill - I auditioned like everyone else, just to be in the mob. Not that it was obvious, but that process was also a screen for "potential" contestants (the 1s). They liked me, clearly, because I got a call in the following week for a contestants' audition. That went well and a whole TON of phone calls later (on a daily basis for a while there), I was scheduled in for the filming. That happened on Valentine's Day. So I've been waiting since February to see myself on TV! Now I'm looking for the next opportunity. I'm in my element behind the came... the "preening peacock" thing must run in my family or something :) @Karen - I was on "Sale of the Century" in 1999. MAN! I'm pleased no-one remembers that!

Is Your Blog Template Holding You Back? (Problogger) 2 years ago
@Thomas, I hear your pain. I am planning to write a series of posts that will come together (in time) as a "Blogger's Guide to SEO". Add my feed to your newsreader and sit tight... I won't be long with it. Meanwhile Darren has written some great stuff (of course) in that area. See his SEO category for more.. Cheers, - Alister

Does Your Blog Design Matter? : Instigator Blog (Instigator Blog) 2 years ago
To Scott, one of the above commenters: I think you've done a great job getting a pro to design your site, but there's one minor issue to be resolved: the image of you on the right is a huge file that weighs in at well over 200Kb! It must be resampled and resized... for the love of your visitors who are not on broadband, etc. :)

Blogging 101: Selecting the Right Font for Your Blog (Blogging Expertise) 2 years ago
Hi Sarah, Yeah it's been fun for me. I relaunched recently, and chose the font Calibri, which is one of the new Vista/Office 2007 fonts. Now, I know full well most will not have it, so I made sure Trebuchet MS, the fallback font, would look good... at least as good as I could make it. However I have copped a lot of heat from people when I tried to explain my reasoning behind the decision. Seems some people are VERY anti-MS and love any opportunity to say so :) Cheers, -Alister

Advanced Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for Wordpress (Alister Cameron // Blogologist) 2 years ago
@Lorelle - Good point. Yes I did put the latest content ordered to the top both for readers and for indexing... although not 100% sure about the value to the latter. To the reader, I just figured they wanted to see my posts in order of date. You would disagree? I also assumed that if they want to see by category/tag, they can do a search...?

New design, new network, new title, new underwear! (Alister Cameron // Blogologist) 2 years ago
@Andy - great observations mate! Here's my thought on the question of what channel I am in: the business channel is already full up with blogs about blogging, the tech channel is not. Although I certainly would have felt right at home, especially beside Brian Clark and Liz Strauss, for example. As you would be aware I can spar with the best of the marketers and technologists alike... so whether I'm here or there is not a big deal. Heck I could have been in the writing channel too, for argument's sake. The cool thing about this being my own blog is that I can write whatever I want, and that means both freedom to stay broad (anything about blogging) and equally the freedom to dialogue and respond to the concern and interest of my readers, which can evolve over time, etc. Lastly I also have a thing about sitewide blogrolls and am not happy to have it there unless I can "AJAXify" it as I did on the previous design of my site. Problem is the AJAX stuff doesn't allow post-load execution of JS, at least not except in very precise situations. So I am scratching my head... as you would say, I'm gunna be leaking a lot of Google Juice off the page and off the site. Any suggestions there would be much appreciated :)
